Series: Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Series' Medium: It's all--anime, manga, movie, games--but I'm taking the anime version of Rei.
Character: Ayanami Rei.
Age: 14.
Sex/Gender: Female.
Canon Role: In the long run, she's entirely necessary to the series, but in general, she is just another Eva pilot--a mysterious one who is not like the others, but one who does what she is told for the "greater good," regardless.
"Real" Name: Izanagi Hisoka.
Please give us a personal history of your character's life and explain to us in detail how they grow and develop over the course of their canon:
The world of Evangelion is defined by Angels and Evas--both of which are basically the same. Regardless, the Evas were created to fight the Angels, large amorphous beings that are drawn to Adam, the first Angel and their progenitor, which would start the Third Impact. The Second Impact wiped out half of humanity, and the Third would surely destroy the rest. Evas are genetically enhanced and altered, and suited with armor to control their abilities. These are piloted by children, by joining with them mentally and through their nervous system.
Ayanami Rei was the first of these children. She was created from the remains of Ikari Yui, one of the head scientists of the project whose soul had joined with Eva Unit 01 in a process known as inscribing personalities to create self-aware computer organisms. Rei is her physical clone, and in addition, houses the soul of the progenitor of humanity--the second Angel, Lilith. A main factor in the series regarding her is her own neutrality towards her own life--possibly because there are many clones of Rei, empty vessels housed deep within the bowels of NERV, which controlled the Eva units. She was replaceable in part because once she died, another could be infused with the soul residing in her, and because of this, she would continue.
In 2010, a four year old Rei (known as Rei I) was introduced to the NERV staff as a friend's daughter by Ikari Gendo, the commander of NERV and husband to the late Yui. This is doubtful, as in a flashback he stated he would name a daughter Rei, plus the simple fact of Rei's own origins. After a few days there, Rei found herself alone with a developer and the current lover of Gendo. Rei I informed the woman that Gendo referred to her as an "old hag," and the woman in turn tells Rei she is replaceable as well, and strangles the child to death before throwing herself from the level she was on.
In 2014, Rei (Rei II) is seen for the first time and starts school in Tokyo-3, the city built to withstand the Angels. In 2015, when the story starts, Rei is fourteen, despite the years in-between and the missing years themselves. Her actual age is in question, but assumably, the scientists could adjust the rate of growth, since all back-up clones are fourteen as well. She resides in a dingy apartment that shows little care or expression--the only things of note there are medicines that she takes, a half-melted pair of glasses, and multiple books.
Rei was trained to be a pilot and went through tests daily. This gave her life importance, and she never questioned her orders, continuing without fail. The start of Rei's story comes from her first synch test with Eva Unit 00. After a brief interlude where things seemed to be going fine, the synch ratio between girl and Eva dropped because of a stated mental instability, and the Eva itself berserks--attacking the chamber around it and detaching itself from the pilot. After trying to shut it down repeatedly, NERV personnel finally get the entry plug (where the pilot resides) to eject, but in the close space it simply careened around the room before crashing to the floor. Seemingly without concern for himself, Gendo raced to her side and worked to free her from the entry plug--burning his hands and melting his glasses that he had dropped. Rei is extremely injured from this, but this moves to shift things between the two; turning a gentle familiarity between them into something closer and more reassuring--someone who cared enough to risk themselves for her. This added a great deal to the absolute loyalty Rei already had towards the man.
Soon after this happened, the third child was found and brought to NERV--Ikari Shinji, the Commander’s own son. An angel (the technical third angel) attacked as he arrived, and fearing, he refused to pilot the Eva. At this, Gendo asked the highly injured Rei to pilot Unit 01, and she instantly agreed, being wheeled into the room on a hospital gurney. At that point, the angel attacked once again, and Rei fell off of the bed she had been on, prompting movement from Shinji to help her. Seeing her try so hard in her state gave him reason to fight in the Eva for the first time.
Afterwards, Gendo came to visit her, telling her that she’ll be healed within twenty days. She returned to school, and is almost invisible--not interacting in any way, other than to tell Shinji when the missions were. During this time, she maintained a healthy and easy relationship with Gendo, to the point of smiling around him. At one point, Shinji is sent to her apartment to give her a key to enter headquarters, and catches her coming out of the shower. Rei, seeing Shinji holding Gendo’s glasses which he picked up, stormed over to grab them, causing both to fall, Shinji landing on her breasts. This did not faze Rei, who was more upset over the glasses than anything else. Shinji followed her when she left to apologize and question about his father. When Shinji mentioned that Gendo isn’t much of one, Rei turned and slapped him, the most emotion shown from her thus far.
Rei participated in Unit 00’s activation once more, keeping the glasses beside her in the entry plug for luck. It goes fine, and Rei is able to launch in her Eva for the first time. During the battle, Shinji is injured, and after Rei watched him until he woke, repeating the new mission to the boy. He seemed like he would refuse to pilot, and without missing a beat, Rei offered to instead pilot in his stead and left the room. Shinji showed up, and the mission for Rei was to protect him as he carried it out, as his Eva had better fighting capabilities at that point. Shinji and Rei spoke beforehand, the boy wondering if she was scared--to which she replied that he shouldn‘t be, because she would absolutely protect him. Rei said that she was bonded to piloting Eva for all people, because she had nothing else, and offered a farewell before the mission. It succeeded, in part to her protecting Shinji, which damaged her Eva in the process. The boy was frantic, and repeating his father’s actions, worked to free her from the entry plug. After telling her that saying goodbye before a mission was too sad, Rei wondered what the correct reaction to this was. Shinji told her to smile, and she did, the first that she had other than with Gendo.
After a few more angels were beat, the second child was brought to Japan--Asuka Langley. The loud girl demanded Rei’s friendship because it would be convenient, and Rei refused, denying the need for it. The second and third children were paired in a mission in which they had to synch with each other completely. Rei came to watch, and upon request, synched with Shinji perfectly where the other girl could not. Despite this, Asuka and Shinji carried out the mission.
After this, Unit 00 was tested again, and returned to service after the interlude while it was being fixed from when it had been damaged protecting Shinji. More angels attacked and were defeated, including one that had infiltrated NERV and took over a testing body that the three pilots were in--that, too, was defeated. A synch test between Unit 00 and 01 was set up. In 01, Rei seemed fine, but Shinji in 00 was not--as before, Unit 00 went out of control, this time pounding the glass in front of Rei until it cracked. Unresponding, Rei did not move until 00 was shut down. Later, Rei carried out the Longinus plan--stabbing a tuning fork like spear through the angel held within the Central Dogma of NERV, said to be Adam, the first angel who prompted the Second Impact.
More time passed, and Rei would be in school less and less, instead staying by Gendo’s side, and working on the dummy plug system, which would copy her data to use in Evas instead of pilots. Around this time, the twelfth angel attacked, swallowing Shinji in a kind of anti-matter lake. This prompts many reactions from Rei--emotions in her voice when she calls out to him, questioning orders for the first time when ordered to abandon him for the time being, even reacting to Asuka’s bravado and becoming angry. When things were finally completed, and Shinji was retrieved, again, Rei sat by his bed as he recovered.
Changes would continue in Shinji's direction--Rei blushing lightly when he takes the time to clean her apartment, and thanking him for it, when she couldn't remember ever feeling gratitude before. This is pointed out in different ways by a classmate, that it is not in Rei's nature to worry about others, and that she talks more with Shinji.
Unit 03 was delivered to Japan, with one of Shinji's friends as the pilot. In transit, however, it was infected by an Angel, which took over the Eva and trapped the pilot inside. Rei hesitates for the first time when ordered to take it down for that reason--either way it was meaningless as she was quickly defeated along with Asuka--one of Unit 00's arms being sacrificed in the process. Shinji, unknowing of the pilot's identity, still refused to fight another human, and Gendo activated the dummy plug system within Unit 01. The dummy plug brutally tore apart Unit 03, and crushed the entry plug holding the pilot, forcing Shinji to experience it all. Afterwards, Rei was worried about Shinji, sitting by his bed until he woke up once more. Shinji quit after this, leaving Asuka and Rei to fight the by-now fourteenth Angel. Rei attempted to go out in Unit 01, but it rejected her, making her sick. Instead she said she would go out in 00, saying, "if I die, I can be replaced." She attempted a kamikaze run, with the equivalent of an atomic explosive--to which she was unsuccessful in both categories. Shinji returned after to defeat the Angel; Rei awoke and found herself alive with some neutral surprise, and Shinji trapped inside his Eva. After a month, they were successful in freeing him.
Soon after, she spoke with Asuka, telling Asuka that her Eva would not move unless she opened her mind to it. Asuka responded by getting more and more upset, slapping Rei and calling her a doll, which she denied. An Angel appeared right after this, trapping Asuka, who went out first, in a beam that penetrated her psyche. Rei retrieved the Lance of Longinus from the Angel trapped in Central Dogma, and threw it to successfully destroy the Angel.
The sixteenth Angel would be this version of Rei's downfall. When sent to engage it, it penetrated her Eva, contaminating both the Eva and herself. While in this state, the Angel appearing as Rei herself, spoke with Rei, asking her to become one with it. Rei refused, saying she was only herself. The Angel claimed that Rei's mind held pain, and showed it to her, to which Rei explained was loneliness. The Angel told her that her mind held sorrow, and Rei was surprised to find herself crying. By this time, the Angel had begun to transform Rei's Eva into a version of itself, and Shinji and Unit 01 were sent to try to help her. Without pulling away from Unit 00, the Angel attacked Shinji, speaking as Rei and asking him about pain, before changing into a smaller version of Rei to contaminate his Eva. This made Rei wonder if her true desire was to become one with Shinji, but she rejected that as well, instead choosing to reverse her Eva's AT Field, trapping the Angel within it. From there, Rei's Eva would self-destruct. At that moment, with tears in her eyes, Rei sees Gendo smiling at her, and reaches out to him--at the same moment, her Eva transformed into a large version of herself, before exploding.
Reapp Additions:
From that point, Rei awoke to find herself in Landel’s Institute. In the first day she came across Shinji and Asuka, neither knowing much about the scenario they found themselves in. The same day, Rei met Kaworu--one who claimed to be the Fifth Child and an Eva pilot, despite Rei not knowing him. There existed something off about the person, and Rei became suspicious of this person who declared them alike. The night found Shinji and Rei freed from their rooms, and the pair wandered, Shinji insisting that Kaworu was missing. They made it upstairs, to which Shinji felt something, and Rei herself was confronted with the feeling of the Angel attempting to become one with her, but she pulled them forward, and they eventually found the supposed-Fifth Child--trapped in a lab with a miniature Lance of Longinus through his chest. Rei began to wonder about the details of that one and the Institute from this point.
The next day they all traveled to a town nearby, Rei gaining details that others believed this was military run. That night she traveled with the pilots, and doors opened to places that didn’t make sense. Eventually a door opened to the Eva hanger that existed at their home--from there things shifted and changed. Kaworu Nagisa began floating and speaking as he shouldn’t, feeling far too much like something else, and Rei reacted to that, moving into her Eva and preparing to use it to defend them. However, the night ended.
The next night, Rei was accosted by an unknown assailant, waking up after being knocked out to wounds on her neck and obvious blood loss. A girl named Aigis found her, taking her into her custody and watching over her. The next few days little was accomplished to her satisfaction. She came across the acquaintance of a boy named Riku and traded information back and forth, continued learning about the Fifth Child, and speaking with Aigis near daily. Rei focused on learning about the experiments done at the Institute, and found little clear information about the whats and whys of the processes. The interest continues when Shinji was the next of the pilots to be experimented on, and he was found in near the same way as Kaworu.
Soon after that, she met a man named Byrne Faraday, and through the process of a night, disturbingly gained some of his recollections. When confronted with this, he denied her, despite the clear knowledge of what she knew. Where she would have avoided him before, he had also moved to save her that night, and because of that, Rei felt a debt unpaid, despite the lack of want to be near to him.
In the remainder of the time Rei was there, the military took over the Institute, which calmed Rei in the way of something familiar. Missions and being told what to do was comforting, despite the source it came from. She met a few more people and continued speaking with those that either held bonds with her, or had information to trade with her.
What point in time are you taking your character from when he/she appears at Landel's and why?:
Rei is coming from the point in which Rei II dies. She self-destructs her unit and wakes up here. From this point, she is still in a growing relationship with Shinji, instead of growing somewhat farther away as Rei III, and has not yet met Kaworu or knows anything about him. In this point in time, she has the most possibility for human emotional and mental growth.
Please give us a detailed description of your character's personality:
Much about Rei is unknown. It's stated explicitly in the series that everything about her has been erased, and she herself gives little to no insight on her own self, and other characters have wondered, "what kind of girl is the first?" to little avail. There are two explicit truths to Rei, however--the fact that she maintains that her life has no meaning, and the fact that she preserves her own sense of self over almost anything. Of course, there's many little things that can be said about her, stated over the course of the series. She doesn't dream, and hates the color red as well as meat, is fine with ramen, and enjoys swimming and water in general. She's someone that others in the series label as "not very adept at living," and someone that "doesn't get along with others;" not in the way that's she is hostile, simply that she is anti-social to an extreme degree.
Rei is extremely reserved, coming off as a silent emotionless doll to a few characters. She is direct and concise, only saying enough words as needed, and does not seek out social interaction. She has both a severe focus and perseverance at succeeding, accompanied by an almost unhealthy detachment and uncaring attitude towards her own life, surroundings, and living conditions--her own apartment being a good example, being both messy and decrepit. This crosses over to her schooling as well--when she's even at school, she's seen staring out the window and never paying attention. Even so, she maintains her grades and is stated to be an honor student. This mentality is reversed when at NERV--Rei takes notes on the missions, and is perfectly attentive. A simple answer would be that piloting Eva is what gives her life any kind of meaning--and that would be true, in her eyes, as she has said as much multiple times. This lack of care, that her life is insignificant, has been stated as "not pessimism but something like that"--a kind of resignation in the fact that she could continue to be replaced, even denying a will, stating that it was unnecessary. And while Rei herself kept a sense of self, it didn't seem to cross over to a sense of self-preservation--what mattered was the mission, what was important was piloting the Eva, and that was what made her continue.
Despite all of that, Rei is very human. While she is most definitely expressionless, she is not emotionless--merely unable, and possibly unwilling, to express it. Physical reactions are not a large part of those reactions, other than pain. When Shinji is in her room the first time, and accidentally gropes her, she doesn't seem to mind. She does, however, care that he had Gendo's glasses in his hand, and remained a little standoffish because of that. With Rei, the physical doesn't matter, stemming from the fact that her body is expendable. This is proven several times, with Shinji, and later with Asuka, when the girl slaps her and Rei does not respond. She does respond to emotional things, even blushing at points--like when Shinji cleans her room, or when he states she'd be a good mother (to which she openly admits embarrassment). With the former, she goes a step further, stating afterward that she had never said thank you before, or felt gratitude, even with Gendo himself. Mentally, Rei is self-sustaining, focusing on her own sense of self and the facts of the world around her.
Even so, Rei is not adverse to touch, and doesn't overtly shy away from human contact. She's very much a young girl as well as a mature being, and reacts with surprise and pain through her expressionless state. She shows a natural possessiveness with Gendo's glasses when they were something precious, and even has them for luck in an activation test. She shows an interest in philosophy, from lines mentioned in the series and her own few inner monologues. Her mindset comes as more abstract and precise, and she has almost no ambition but to complete the mission at hand; possibly explained in the way that Rei will not accept a failure while alive, and will fight to succeed to her own death, continuously going above and beyond what's asked of her for the simple fact of the need to pilot the Eva and not being concerned with her own life. She is generally a long range type when piloting, and shows extreme confidence in herself while in an Eva and her ability to protect others and finish the mission. Rei usually tends towards defensive or high risk positions in battle, again, due to her lack of concern for herself. Due to her focused nature, Rei is very watchful, and has an extremely good memory, possibly bordering an eidetic. In combat as well as parts of life, Rei has good instincts, able to judge the enemy's next move or a person's inner thoughts.
Despite her stoicism and silence, Rei is, again, still emotional. While she sees no need for unnecessary friendship, she is not adverse to bonds, shown with both Gendo and Shinji. She's defensive of Gendo, and grows increasingly worried and concerned about Shinji, making it a habit to sit by his bed when he's injured. When he's swallowed by the twelfth Angel, this is shown the most--sounding emotional when she calls out to him, and questioning orders for the first time, as well as showing anger when Asuka mocked him. Gradually over the series, Rei talks more with Shinji, and is able to synch with him and match his movements perfectly in a demo test--though whether this is due to her starting bond with Shinji or her own watchfulness and awareness is unknown. At one point, Rei shows some bitterness at her role at NERV--Asuka states that Rei is treated much better than the others, and Rei stops to turn and look at her, replying that she is not treated in any way better. She becomes someone that Shinji comes to to ask advice, especially about his father, Gendo--though halfway through the series Rei admits that she does not know what kind of man Gendo is. She accompanies Gendo to many places, and while she has synch tests, he is never far away. Rei exhibits perfect serenity while programming the dummy plugs when Gendo is around, and is seemingly comfortable in his presence. This seems to shift as the series progresses, especially with the thirteenth Angel, and Rei's own hesitance at fighting another pilot, and her increased concern with Shinji after the incident. The end of the series gives rise that Shinji replaces Gendo in Rei's affections, along with the slow realizations that Gendo was only using her and Shinji. While her life has no meaning in her eyes, it is her own life, and Rei starts to become dissatisfied.
With the sixteenth Angel, Rei's sense of self is further defined, as the Angel attempts to manipulate her, first by forcing her own deep loneliness forward, and then by making her question whether she truly wanted to be one with Shinji. Despite her own longing for a bond, she still adamantly denies this, and disallows the option, falling back on self-sacrifice rather than risking the outcome of becoming one with another, or Shinji's life. Rei states that she can only be herself, and no one else, and through everything, she holds firm to that.
Please give us a physical description of your character:
Rei is a slight girl, slender and average, with light blue hair and red eyes. She comes off as normal, except for her own mannerisms. Emotions aren't usually seen on her face, if at all, and she has a tendency to stare sometimes. Despite her small stature and age, she does come off as entirely female, with curves suited to a pixie more than to a person.
What kinds of otherworldly abilities does your character have, if any?:
In general, Rei has no normal supernatural abilities. Her healing seems to be a bit quicker than normal, based on how often she gets hurt and is bandaged up, but otherwise, her skill set is of that of an extremely talented girl.
Except for her AT Field. In Episode 24, she uses it for the only recorded time, canceling out the remaining entirety of the electronic equipment being used to notate what was going on below. Rei's AT Field seems completely invisible to the eye; lacking the normal telling signs of ripples on the air in a geometric pattern. Hers is said to be equal (if not more) to Kaworu's, which is the strongest NERV has ever recorded. This makes sense as she possesses the soul of Lilith, the second Angel, and he retains the soul of Adam. As well as maintaining its main purpose as a shield, it also is capable of cancelling out almost everything that ran on waves--light, radio, sub-atomic particles, etc--as well as an offensive, since when powered, they are able to start to destroy and deteriorate things in their immediate radius.
If present, how do you plan to tweak these powers to make your character appropriately hindered in the setting of Landel's?:
Her AT field will be wiped out entirely, just maintaining the little more than human level of healing--which is basically the same as Landel’s healing, anyway.
Does your character have any non-otherworldly abilities/training that surpass the norm?:
She's one of the best Eva pilots. And despite missing a great deal of school, she's still in it, which says that she's intelligent enough to breeze through her make-up tests.
Given that this RP takes place in an unsettling and outright horrific environment, how do you justify your character as being appropriate in both body and mind for this kind of setting?:
The world of Evangelion seems to fit nicely within the horror scope of Damned--the amount of fighting and destroying being done warps the main character's psyche entirely within the span of the series. For Rei herself, she is used to it in the way that she has never questioned it and it is something that is. Her detachment creates an easy parallel process to the type of things that others wouldn't be able to handle, and even when she starts becoming more human in her actions, she is still someone who ignores the horrific aspects to do what needs to be done.
